Perimenopause Symptoms

Perimenopause or the stage before menopause is a phase that begins when the female body takes a step towards menopause and this ends with menopause. It is a pre-cursor to the menopause phase. It is generally seen to occur anywhere between 35 to 50 years of a woman’s life. With perimenopause your body begins its journey to a new phase in life – menopause.

Perimenopause is be a phase which lasts from about a year to about 10 years. This time however, differs from one woman to the other depending on several factors that have to play a role.

Changes in the menstrual cycle begin during the perimenopausal phase. Many women experience several symptoms due to the changes in the hormone level in the body. Some of the symptoms experienced during this period include hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disorders, weight gain, anxiety and palpitations. With cycles getting irregular and the further decrease in the estrogen level, the bones of the woman start getting weaker. Osteoporosis may set in at this very stage. Perimenopause ends with one year having passed since the last period.

Some other perimenopause symptoms that are commonly seen include thinning of hair or even hair loss, joint pains and even depression. The symptoms differ from one woman to the other due to the difference that arises in the exercise levels, attitude, diet and even as a result of any medication taken. Some tips that could help ease these perimenopausal symptoms include:

• Eating right is the answer to several problems. A healthy balanced diet would make a big difference to your overall well-being and can provide a big relief from many of the perimenopausal symptoms. Drink lots of water too.

• A proper exercise regime would help relieve you of several of the perimenopausal symptoms. Exercise can actually create a feeling of well-being and should be done regularly. Many women tend to put on extra weight during this stage. It is important that you keep your weight under control.

• Avoid caffeine, smoking, alcohol and spicy food. It would help make a major difference to your perimenopausal symptoms.

• A multi-vitamin supplement and also regular intake of calcium along with a balanced diet would be very helpful.

Talking to your doctor regarding the symptoms experienced is very important. You would not only be able to gain knowledge regarding perimenopausal symptoms but also be aware of what to expect. Your doctor would be able to give you the right advice that allows you to cope with the symptoms of the perimenopausal phase. A positive attitude is very important to cope with these symptoms in the right way. A balanced nutritious diet and a regular exercise regime would make a major difference and go a long way in helping you be a healthy and happy individual during this new phase of your life.

One reference book I keep at home is the Peoples Chemist. I bought it last year and have found it invaluable for checking out symptoms and treatments of every day health problems.
